An Lysardh

In one of my favourite books, James Elkins, (What painting is)  suggests that artists are similar to alchemists in their desire to understand the nature of paint. He suggests it is:

the best and most eloquent way to understand how paint can mean, how it can be so entrancing, so addictive, so replete with expressive force that it keeps hold of an artist’s attention for a lifetime

This body of work , produced over 2 years, involved walking, photographing, researching, and generally immersing myself in  the south coast of Cornwall particularly the Lizard.   I like to think that it is only when I really know a place that I can start to paint it, which then becomes a collaboration between myself and the paint.

Some of this work was exhibited at the Xtrospective Gallery in Penryn in 2017, alongside a the work of sculptor Samvado.
